Katie’s Story
Katherine “Katie” Elizabeth DeGregorio Silvestri 1989–2026
Her life was far too short, but the impact she made will last far beyond her years.
A Mother, Wife, Daughter, Sister, and Friend
Above all else, Katie's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife to David and a loving mother to their daughter, Sophia Joy. Becoming a mother was one of the most meaningful chapters of her life, and her love for Sophia was at the center of everything.

She was also a cherished daughter, sister, and friend whose warmth, humor, loyalty, and generosity brought people together. Katie had a way of making people feel seen and cared for. The relationships she built were deep and genuine, and the love she gave so freely became a defining part of her legacy.

A Life of Compassion, Courage, and Love
Katherine “Katie” Elizabeth DeGregorio Silvestri was the kind of person who made the world better simply by being in it. A devoted wife, loving mother, compassionate nurse practitioner, adventurous spirit, and proud Cape Codder, Katie spent her life caring for others, embracing every opportunity, and building meaningful connections with the people around her. Her life was far too short, but the impact she made will last far beyond her years.
A Heart for Helping Others
Born on January 12, 1989, Katie grew up in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where she excelled academically and athletically and formed friendships that would remain important throughout her life. Her compassion for others and instinct to help those in need led her to a career in healthcare. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Rhode Island and later her Master of Science in Nursing from Yale School of Nursing.

As a nurse and nurse practitioner, Katie dedicated herself to caring for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Her experience spanned emergency departments, pediatric intensive care, oncology, and community health. During the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, she built meaningful relationships with people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance use challenges, treating every person with dignity, empathy, and respect.

Caring for others was never simply her profession. It was part of who she was. Katie consistently put the needs of others before her own, leaving a lasting impression on patients, colleagues, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her.
A Life Full of Adventure
Katie approached life with curiosity, energy, and an eagerness to experience everything it had to offer. She was an avid traveler who had a remarkable gift for turning strangers into friends. Alongside her husband, David, she explored the world, snorkeling in Curaçao, riding horseback in Nicaragua, exploring ancient tombs in Egypt, and tracking chimpanzees in Rwanda.

Their adventures took them to extraordinary places, including a mountaintop in Thailand where they became engaged and the beaches of Zanzibar where they married. Yet no matter how far she traveled, Katie always felt most at home on Cape Cod.

The ocean, the beach, searching for sea glass, and watching the sun set were among the simple pleasures that brought her peace. She was proud of her Falmouth roots and deeply connected to the community that would later rally around her family in extraordinary ways.

Katie also loved a challenge. A dedicated runner, she completed the Falmouth Road Race sixteen times. Running represented so much of what defined her: determination, resilience, a willingness to push herself, and a belief in showing up even when something was difficult.

Even after her ALS diagnosis, Katie remained determined to participate in the race she loved. Her courage inspired those around her, reminding her community that the spirit of a fighter is about far more than physical strength.

An ALS Diagnosis That Changed Everything

In December 2023, at just 34 years old and only three months after the birth of her daughter, Katie was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As the disease progresses, people can lose the ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe independently. There is currently no cure.

For Katie and her family, the diagnosis brought unimaginable challenges. A young mother who had spent her life caring for others was suddenly facing a devastating disease with no known cure, while navigating the uncertainty of what lay ahead for herself and her family.

The physical and emotional toll of ALS is immense, and the financial burden can be overwhelming. Specialized equipment, in-home care, accessibility modifications, and other expenses can place extraordinary pressure on families already facing so much.

But Katie was not alone.

A Community Rallied Around Katie
When Katie’s diagnosis became known, her family, friends, and the Falmouth community came together with extraordinary love and determination. What began as an effort to support Katie and her family grew into a powerful movement of fundraising, awareness, and hope.

Through community events, donations, merchandise, running teams, and countless acts of generosity, people from near and far found ways to help. Local businesses, neighbors, friends, and even people who had never met Katie personally joined the effort.

Team Katie’s Cure became a way for people to stand beside Katie, support her family, and fight for a future without ALS. Every fundraiser represented more than money raised. It was a reminder that Katie was loved, that her family was surrounded by people who cared, and that even in the face of something so devastating, a community could make a difference.

The generosity shown to Katie and her family revealed something powerful: when people come together around a shared purpose, compassion can become meaningful action.

Katie’s Passing, and the Legacy She Leaves Behind
On July 4, 2026, Katie passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the age of 37, following her courageous battle with ALS.

Her passing left an immeasurable void in the lives of her husband, daughter, family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched. The world lost a remarkable woman far too soon.

But Katie’s story does not end with her passing.

Her life was defined by caring for others, meeting challenges with determination, embracing adventure, and loving her family and community fiercely. Those qualities remain at the heart of Katie’s Cure.

The outpouring of support that surrounded Katie demonstrated what is possible when people come together for someone in need. It also revealed how many other individuals and families facing ALS could benefit from that same compassion and support.

Carrying Katie’s Legacy Forward
Katie spent her life helping others through some of their most difficult moments. In her honor, we want to carry that spirit forward.

Katie’s Cure is entering a new chapter, with a vision of raising funds to help other individuals and families navigating an ALS diagnosis. We are working toward establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and developing a grant program intended to provide financial assistance to families facing the overwhelming costs and challenges associated with ALS.

Our goal is to extend the kind of love and support that surrounded Katie to others who need it — helping ease some of the financial burdens, offering hope during uncertain times, and reminding families that they do not have to face this journey alone.

This next chapter is still taking shape, but its purpose is rooted in everything Katie represented. We hope to build something lasting from the generosity of the community that stood beside her, creating opportunities for that kindness to reach families who are now facing the same devastating disease.

Katie’s story is why we began. Her compassion is what inspires us. And her legacy will guide us as we work toward a future where more families affected by ALS can find meaningful support.

For Katie. For her family. For every family facing ALS. For a cure.
Her story is our foundation. Helping others is our future.
